Guide for using Google Maps after June 11.

At June 11 there will be a change in the implementation of Google Maps on your website. This newsletter will serve as a guideline for the coming changes.

What does this change mean?

Google will change its Maps platform in a “semi” payed service. Every month you will receive a $200,- credit on your account from Google. Every interaction on your website with Google Maps will be settled with your credit. If you run out of credit then you will have two options:

  1. Pay for the interactions (here fore you need to link you Creditcard or pay by bank debit)
  2. Setup a max credit of $200. Maps will be disabled after this credit has been used

These settings can be set up via your Google account. At this very moment the Google Maps functionality is linked to our Snakeware account on the basis of an API key.

Here you can find more information about pricing and interactions.

What is an API?

API stands for Application Programming Interface. Briefly, an API ensures that software can communicate with each other through an unique key. This key is an unique combination of digits and letters. In this case the API key can show specific information on a Map. As said before, the current API key is linked to our Snakeware account, but this will change.

What's next?

As per June 11 the created API key from our Snakeware account will be disabled. We would like to receive a new generated API key which is linked to your Google account before June 11. You can do this by logging in to your Google account and follow these steps. Unfortunately we can’t set this up for you because the API key has to be linked to your Google account.

Step-by-step

  1. Go to the Google API console and login;
  2. Create a project;
  3. Click Continue to enable the API;
  4. On the Credentials page, get an API key;
  5. From the dialog displaying the API key, select Restrict key to set a browser restriction on the API key.
  6. In the Key restriction section, select HTTP referrers (web sites), then follow the on-screen instructions to set referrers with the following structure:

    *.domainname.com

    domainname.com/*

  7. (Optional) Enable billing. Hereby you will receive a monthly credit of $200,- for your account;
  8. Send your API key to Snakeware.

We would like to receive your API key as soon a possible! Chances are that Google Maps on your site will stop working otherwise.
